Race Craft Workshops for Juniors

Radical Race Craft Workshops

Build skills. Gain confidence. Have more fun on race day.

The Radical Race Craft Workshop Series is designed to help young riders feel more prepared, more confident, and more excited to line up at Bellingham’s local mountain bike races.

Whether your rider is racing for the first time or already loves competition, these workshops focus on the skills that make racing smoother, safer, and way more fun.

Led by Radical Roots MTB’s professional coaching team, each workshop focuses on a specific skill like cornering, braking, or line choice — while also giving riders a chance to practice on our local race trails and learn how to pre-ride a course like a pro.

Our goal is simple:
Help riders grow their skills, support each other, and show up to race day feeling ready

Who These Workshops Are For

These workshops are open to all youth riders ages 6–18

  • Riders in Radical Ripper After-School Programs and/or Summer Camps

  • Riders planning to race the local series

  • Riders in other local programs like GGR & WMBC

  • Riders curious about trying their first race

  • Riders who just want to improve their trail skills

No previous race experience is required.

In fact, the local race series in Bellingham are some of the best places for first-time racers — supportive, welcoming, and focused on fun.

Our coaches create an inclusive environment where every rider belongs, regardless of speed, experience, or goals.

Why Race Craft?

Racing well isn’t just about pedaling hard and not using your brakes.

Great racers know how to:

• Pre-ride a course and find fast lines
• Stay relaxed under pressure
• Brake efficiently
• Carry speed through corners
• Manage nerves on race day
• Support their teammates

These workshops break down those skills in a fun, supportive environment so riders can practice, session features, and build confidence before race day.

Plus, riders get something most racers don’t:
coaching on the actual trails used in the race series.

What Happens at a Workshop

Each session includes:

• Skill coaching focused on a specific race technique
• Pre-riding and sessioning key trail sections
• Line choice practice
• Coach feedback and progression tips
• A supportive group of peers
• A short “homework challenge” so riders can keep improving between sessions

Many workshops also take place on race trails used in the upcoming events, helping riders become familiar with the terrain before race day.

Race Day Support

When possible, Radical Roots MTB coaches will also be present at races to help riders:

• Get to the start line prepared
• Answer questions and calm nerves
• Offer mechanical support if needed
• Celebrate finishes and debrief together afterward

Belonging to a supportive group that has your back can make a huge difference for young riders.

Requirements & What to Bring:

Inclusive Riding Environment

Radical Roots MTB programs have historically centered riders who identify as WTFN-B (women/gomen, trans, femme, and non-binary riders). Creating welcoming, supportive riding spaces for these communities remains a core value of our programs.

At the same time, we welcome all riders who are excited to contribute to a positive, respectful, and inclusive riding environment.

Bike Requirements

Riders must bring a well-fitting mountain bike suitable for off-road trails that is in safe working condition.

Your bike should include:

• Front and rear hand brakes that the rider can operate confidently
• A wide range of gears for climbing and descending
• A seat post that can be adjusted for climbing and descending
• Knobby off-road tires

Please remove kickstands and bar ends before the workshop.

If you’re unsure about your bike’s condition, we strongly recommend visiting a local bike shop for a safety check or tune-up before attending.

Helmet

A properly fitting helmet in good condition is required.

Helmets must not have been involved in a crash.

If you need help getting a helmet, please reach out — we have some extras available.

Note: Some race organizers require racers to wear a full-face helmet during competition.

Clothing & Gear

Please come prepared with:

• Comfortable riding clothes
• Layers for changing weather
• Water and snacks

Bellingham riding conditions can vary, so dressing for wet or cool weather is often a good idea.

Rider Expectations

We ask all riders to come ready to learn and support each other.

That means bringing:

• An open mind
• A positive attitude
• Willingness to try new skills
• Respect for coaches and fellow riders

Constructive feedback is an important part of learning, and our coaches work hard to create a supportive environment where every rider can grow.
